SIMS 2023

Now Announcing SIMS Scholarships for 2023

We’re now accepting applications for the Summer Institute for Medical Students (SIMS)—an intensive, five-day immersion experience for med students who want to learn about addiction and recovery (and how to care for patients who need help).

Please share this opportunity with anyone who might be interested, and submit your applications prior to March 1, 2023.

What is the SIMS program?

This is an unparalleled learning opportunity that gives medical students the chance to work alongside the esteemed clinicians at Hazelden Betty Ford and learn all about the science of addiction and the spirit of recovery.

SIMS is hosted at the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California, and the Hazelden Betty Ford campuses in Center City, Minnesota, and Newberg, Oregon.*

As a SIMS participant, you can expect to:

  • Learn about the disease model of addiction—which we refer to as a bio-psycho-social-spiritual disease—and how treatment addresses the whole person.
  • Learn how Twelve Step programs are used in addiction treatment and why they’re a part of the lifetime recovery “prescription.”
  • Shadow our clinicians while learning to “think with your heart” and relate to the human being behind the disease.
  • Receive an often-overlooked but invaluable medical education that would improve the lives of countless patients whose addiction would otherwise go untreated or unnoticed.
